The holiday season always brings an increase in accidents and fatalities as a result of car accidents, and one of the leading causes of these accidents is drunk or intoxicated drivers. To combat this rise and try to keep our roads safer, Washington State Patrol troopers will be increasing their DUI patrols and countermeasures this holiday season.
Beginning back on December 15 and extending all the way through New Year's Day, State Troopers have teamed up with local law enforcement officers to attempt to curb the number of drunk or intoxicated drivers on the road.
The increase in patrols this year comes as just the latest step in an effort by the Washington state troopers to reduce serious injuries or fatalities from traffic collisions to zero by the year 2030. This is a long way from coming true, however, as the number of fatalities involving intoxicated motorists has jumped by 87% in just the past five years.
According to Washington State Patrol, the most dangerous drivers are t hose who are under the influence of various drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol. State troopers have re-emphasized that buzzed or high driving is the same as drunk driving, and will also result in an arrest.
Avoiding a DUI
A DUI charge can be an extremely costly affair. In addition to the large fines, you will likely have to pay expensive court costs, drug or alcohol classes, and more. There are other non-financial consequences as well, including possible jail time, probation, and license suspensions which may cost you your ability to drive at all for a year or more.
The easiest way to avoid getting a DUI this holiday season? Plan ahead. If you are going to a holiday party or celebration where you know you will be consuming alcohol, either travel with a designated driver or get a ride to and from the location. The cost of an Uber or cab fare is far lower than a DUI arrest. Additionally, getting a ride allows you to relax and enjoy yourself, knowing your trip home is taken care of.
