Ignition Interlock Devices in Snohomish

Information from a Top DUI Lawyer in the Bothell, WA Area

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a portable breathalyzer that is installed into your car. Before you can start your vehicle, you must pass the breathalyzer test each time. Because the ignition interlock device is wired to your ignition, once you pass the test, you are able to start the car. The court allows DUI offenders to obtain an ignition interlock device so that they can continue to drive.

As a result of your DUI arrest, you may be required to apply for and receive an ignition interlock device, as well as an ignition interlock license (IIL). Generally, these devices are required for repeat DUI offenders, as well as first-time offenders whose blood alcohol content registered above a certain range. To preserve your ability to drive legally, seek the guidance of an experienced Snohomish County DUI attorney. I can help walk you through the process and help you comply with the court's requests.

As your attorney, I can help with many elements of your IID application and hearing, including:

  • Negotiating for financial aid regarding payment for the device
  • Competently presenting the facts of your case at the hearing
  • Demonstrating to the court reasons why you may be able to be exempt from the device

Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Tips

If your IID reads a level of 0.025 or above, your car will not start, here are some helpful tips to remember after your IID is installed:

  • Do not drink and drive!
  • Do not allow anyone else to blow into your device.
  • Do not use the IID as a “pass / fail” system to prove to your friends that they have had too much to drink.
  • Consider this: failed blows will be reported to the Court and /or the DOL.
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used mouthwash
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used spicy food
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used soda pop
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used foods made with yeast (bread, donuts, cinnamon rolls)
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used alcohol filled chocolate
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used breath mints
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used perfume
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used after shave
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used hair spray
  • Wait 15 minutes before driving after you have ingested or used Nyquil (avoid using Nyquil as it contains alcohol - and if you use this product - you will be drinking alcohol!)
  • If you have a false positive and you have not been drinking, make sure you rinse your mouth with water & blow again to prove that the problematic blow was a false positive.
  • If you don't provide an additional sample of your breath when asked, you may be locked out and unable to drive your car. You may also have to pay someone to “fix” the IID to allow you to drive again.
  • If you don't provide an additional sample of your breath after a “bad” blow, this will be considered a failure. This may result in the court calling you back to Court to address the failed blow (they will presume that you were drinking and hiding something).
  • Be sure to make all of your IID scheduled appointments
  • Contact your IID provider and explain if you have an issue with your device. They exist to help keep you driving.
