Labor Day is often thought of as the end of the summer season, and many people choose to celebrate with one last summer barbecue or other get-together. These parties can frequently involve alcohol, which then leads to a sharp increase in the number of intoxicate drivers on the roads.
Over the next several weeks, State Troopers will be increasing their presence on roads in search of intoxicated drivers as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. This coincides with the holiday weekend, which historically has been one of the most dangerous and even deadly weekends of the year for motorists involved with drunk-driving accidents.
Another sobering statistic from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission found that nearly 60% of all accidents involving impaired drivers in 2015 involved drivers that were under the influence of both alcohol and one or more kinds of drugs.
Last year, State Troopers made 146 DUI arrests and stopped nearly 5,000 drivers for speeding over the holiday weekend. This unfortunately was not enough to stop the 277 collisions that the Troopers also responded to.
Increase Presence; Increased Safety
If you've driven a lot lately, you may have already noticed an increase in police presence. The additional enforcement began back on August 19th and will run until September 5th. This added presence will hopefully decrease the amount of reckless behavior on the roads, including excessive speeding, while hopefully providing an incentive for people not to drink and drive.
