New Tostitos Bag Helps Curb Super Bowl Drunk Driving

Posted by Mark Garka | Feb 06, 2017 | 0 Comments

Did you attend a Super Bowl party this past weekend? If you're like millions of other Americans, you likely did, and you may have noticed a unique looking bag if Tostitos chips were served. Developed by Goodby Silverstein & Partners, this bag has a very small system in it that can detect microscopic traces of alcohol on a person's breath, and alert them by flashing a red steering wheel and the message “don't drink and drive.”

“We're proud to introduce to the world the first bag of chips that gets you home safe. For a football fan, there is a lot of emotion involved with a game. It's easy to drink more than you planned,” said Roger Baran, a creative director at Goodby Silverstein & Partners.

In addition to being able to detect if a person has been drinking, the bag would then provide a UPC code, which any person could then enter the code into the Uber app and receive $10 off of an Uber ride home. Thanks to “near-field communication” technology, this could be accomplished by simply tapping the bag with a smartphone. Frito-Lay believes that employing the bag helped remove as many as 25,000 cars from the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 45 people were killed on Super Bowl Sunday by drunk drivers in 2015, nearly half of all traffic-related fatalities that day. In 2013, those victims included the aunt and uncle of Tennessee Titans player Delanie Walker, who played in that game. Walker stated “Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable. Thanks to Tostitos and Uber, it's easier than ever to make a safe choice if your plans include alcohol.”

Consequences of a DUI

If you are arrested for a DUI, the consequences you face could be severe. In addition to possible jail time and large fines, you could be forced to pay court costs, attend drug and alcohol training, and more. But rest assured, a qualified DUI attorney can help you fight back against your charges and maintain your freedoms from the harshness of the criminal justice system.

If you have been arrested and charged with DUI this Super Bowl weekend, you have a very limited amount of time to act, which means you should seek legal representation from a Snohomish County DUI lawyer as soon as possible. Attorney Mark W. Garka of the Law Office of Mark W. Garka, PLLC has gained a reputation as one of the DUI defense industry leaders, and has a number of industry recognitions and accolades, including a perfect 10.0 Superb rating from Avvo.
